The choice of a tool supplier is a process of evolution. When we began production machining, we had been sourcing from multiple vendors. We found ourselves in a constant state of short supply and excessive costs for expedited shipping. Trying to guess at the number of end mills, drills, inserts, etc. at product launch was seldom successful, and lead to excessive quantity buying and next day shipping. Machine down time was not uncommon due to tooling availability. All these factors created increased overall project costs.
Perry Mill Supply was one of our many vendors at the time and they suggested going with a vendor managed inventory (VMI) program. We found there to be a broad range of offerings by many different companies. With these choices there came a broad range of associated costs and complexities. I am extremely grateful for the VMI system here in our facility provided by Perry Mill Supply. As long as the item is scanned from the cabinet, a replacement is brought in by their associate. Being that we are a smaller facility, it takes care of ordering the tools and creating various reports for traceability while being very organized. Even with our company growing, it was never a challenge to add tooling or adjust items/quantities while we add associates and equipment.
